natural colours make the difference!

Two white dresses, which didn't made it to fashionshow were waiting for a couple of months for some colour. I had made two big dyepots for the classes with Pam, one with onions and the other one with eucalyptus. Both were enriched with an old copperpot and got in this way some extra colouring additives. It is amazing how the dresses come to life and don't you agree that in this case colour makes a big difference? The patterns of the bundling and marks from the leaves has given a gorgeous design on the silk and wool. And I love the button at the front...

Twee witte jurkjes die niet de modeshow haalden lagen de hele zomer al te wachten op kleur. Voor de workshop van Pam had ik twee grote verfbaden gemaakt, een met ui en de ander met eucaplyptus. Om een diepere kleur te bereiken had ik er ook een koperen pot als beits meegetrokken. Na een ruime tijd in de pot te hebben geprutteld, was dit het resultaat. Ik vind het altijd verbazingwekkend hoe het wit tot leven komt door de natuurlijke kleuren en vind je ook niet dat kleur hier het verschil maakt! De afbindstrepen en afdruk van bladeren laten een prachtig patroon achter. En de knoopjes maken het helemaal af! 

                                               

Sunday Market Westergasfabriek Amsterdam

Last Sunday a week ago I woke up with a sunny bright shining through my curtains. A sundaymorning in October couldn't start better than that!!!!!! Phylene had hired a stall at the Sundaymarket in Amsterdam and we decided to share it. We were very lucky with the beautifull weather and people seems to be eager to buy. They touched the felt, admired the felt, were looking at it with a lot of interest, talked about it with us, but buying...............no............no-one............... Maybe it wasn't the time of the year, maybe it was too expensive or maybe the sundaymarket isn't the artist market anymore, but just a funny day out with the kids and were buying an icecream and having a beer is the most people will want to spent.....

Vorige week zondag werd ik wakker met een heerlijk zonnetje op mijn  ramen. Beter kon een ochtend in Oktober niet staren. Phylene had een kraampje gehuurd op de zondagmarkt bij de Westergasfabrieken in Amsterdam en ik zou meedoen. We boften met dit prachtige weer en met de mensen die op pad waren gegaan om te genieten zolang het nog kon. Het leek erop dat ze er zin in hadden om ook te kopen. Ze wilden graag voelen, we kregen veel complimenten dat we zoveel moois hadden gemaakt, ze keken met belangstelling naar hoe het was gemaakt en we hadden leuke gesprekken. Maar kopen...., h e l e m a a l niets, nada, noppes, niemand!! Tuurlijk hebben we onze visite kaartjes uitgedeeld en was er soms verrassende feedback. En misschien was het niet het juiste moment, was onze kleding te duur geprijsd of misschien is de zondagmarkt niet meer de kunstenaarsmarkt, maar alleen nog maar een leuk dagje uit met de kinderen en waar een ijsje en een biertje het enige nog is waar geld aan wordt uitgegeven..........

Free construction

Pam de Groot, feltartist from Australia, introduced an another way to make felted clothes. She combined her knowledge about zero waste and substraction cutting with her experiences in sewing garments and feltmaking  and bought it to a next level. It needed some time for most of the students to get to understand this new free path of working. It was diffucult how to visualize the new form of the dress from such a huge  prefeltform. But they succeeded very well, It was amazing to watch the transformation once it is completely felted and dyed.....

Pam de Groot (spreek uit als 'Pem de Groet') uit Australie heeft vorig weekend een zeer unieke workshop geintroduceerd in mijn atelier Fiberfusing in het maken van vilten kleding. Ze heeft haar kennis van zero waste en subtraction cutting zo gecombineerd met haar ervaring in het naaien van kleding en vilten dat het idee naar een volgend niveau is gebracht. Deze nieuwe manier van werken bracht menig cursist uit balans, de vrijheid  vroeg veel van het inlevingsvermogen. Des te groter is de verbazing en voldoening als van zo'n heel groot stuk voorvilt er uiteindelijk een prachtige kledingstuk ontstaan die uniek is in zijn soort.

As promissed, it took a while to download them, don't know why. I guess it is to hot to work on the computer. My collection is based on the use of plantprinted silks and vintage fabrics. Enjoy !

Zoals beloofd, de fashionshow! Alhoewel er altijd punten zijn die beter kunnen, is het mijn inziens een geslaagde show geweest. Mijn collectie is gebaseerd op plantaardig geprinte zijdes en het gebruik van vintage stoffen. Voor diegenen die het nog niet gezien hebben of het nog een keer willen zien, geniet!

Refashioned - green hotspot downtown fashionweek Amsterdam

Here we are busy with making a good mix of the music of Cruxshadows for the show and I'am getting in a good mood! Yeah, tomorrow will be the fashionshow Refashioned. The show  will be part of the downtown fashionweek and is choosen to be one of the green hotspots! It's a fantastic opportunity to show felt as fashion. Wool is a sustainable material which has many possibilities. It has challenged Horst to experiment with it and starting to creating his elaborate, avantgarde gowns made of felted wool. The show shall be openend by showing the coats made by several designers, supervised by Horst. This will be followed the Transcendence-collection made by Tatiana Sheverda, 'Lines and Holes' made by  Kate Ramsey and the NOWA natural organic wearable art collection of Dorie van Dijk   Horst shall be showcasing his new purposed line as a tribute to his grandmother.  So let's Refashioned!   

The fashion show will be held in Theatre 't Woord at Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam— Oosterdokskade 143, 1011 DL Amsterdam—on 10 July 2012 at 20.00 uur, with a preview at the stairways at 19.15. Tickets available online www.oba.nl, click agenda and kaartverkoop  

Achter mij wordt de band samengesteld met muziek van de Cruxshadows en het brengt me in een goede stemming. Het is bijna zover, morgen de fashionshow Refashioned!! Ik naai nog de laatste knoopjes aan, doe labeltjes in de kleding en we maken woldonuts voor in het haar. De fashionshow zal onderdeel zijn van de downtownfashionweek en is gekozen als een van de Green Hotspots. Dit biedt een geweldige gelegenheid om vilt als modeproduct te laten zien. Wol is een duurzaam materiaal met vele mogelijkheden. Het heeft Horst uitgedaagd om te gaan experimenteren en is daarmee bekend geworden om zijn avangardistische kleding. Deze show wordt geopend met 'coat-coutures' van diverse ontwerpers, gevolgd door de Transcendence-collectie van  Tatiana Sheverda, 'Lines and Holes' van Kate Ramsey en de NOWA natural organic wearable art collection van Dorie van Dijk. Horst zal zijn zijn nieuwste collectie van jurken laten zien als eerbetoon aan zijn grootmoeder, die in haar leven vele bruidsjurken heeft gemaakt.

A little bit of trumpetnoise for myself. I have made a small video of the 2-minutes of my first fashionfame with my NOWA Natural Organic Wearable Art '11 collection from my label Plantdrukkunst ©. This was possible because of the organisation of a fashionshow with and by members of the Dutch Feltassociation.

Feltfashionshow Kruithuis Den Bosch

Yesterday was such an energic day!!! The feltexhibition in 'Kruithuis Den Bosch' ended with a fabulous, fantastic feltfashionshow. The garments were made by some members of the Dutch Feltassociation, showed by members of the dancegroup Almere, organised by Bertina Slettenhaar and possible because of the help of many volunteers. I'am trying to upload a selection in a film-presentation, but I haven't succeed sofar. 

Gisteren was een heerlijke dag, een dag vol met energie en spektakel in het Kruithuis in Den Bosch. Ik heb ontzettend genoten van alle prachtige creaties die in de viltmodeshow op de catwalk voorbij kwamen en die gemaakt zijn door een aantal leden van de Viltkontaktgroep. De show is onder leiding van Bertina Slettenhaar tot stand gekomen met medewerking van de dansgroep uit Almere. Mijn filmpresentatie van de foto's wil helaas nog niet lukken.

'I will always love you'

While there was snow and ice everywhere here in the Netherlands I started to work on a new springdress. Two weeks ago I made this one, named it 'I will always love you'. Just in time for Valentineday, not knowing that this tragedy with Whitney Houston would happen. There is an old dutch 'poem' saying that flowers will fade, boats will drown, but the love will always excist. In this dress love is showed by the colour of the eucalyptus leaf and the sweet soft pink of the natural dyebath with redwood.   

Twee weken geleden toen er overal nog sneeuw lag was ik al bezig met de lente. Wat begon als een proefje veranderde in een kledingstuk dat zowel als jurk als rok gedragen kan worden. Ik gaf het de naam 'I will always love you'. Helemaal passend bij de Valentijnsdag, maar niet wetende dat Whitney Houston enkele dagen terug op zo'n tragische manier om het leven zou komen. Het poeziegedichtje 'bloemen verwelken, bootjes vergaan, maar onze liefde zal altijd bestaan' speelde door mijn hoofd. In deze jurk vertaald dat zich in de zoete tint van het roodhout verfbad en de zachtoranje print van de eucalyptusbladeren.     

workshop with Charity van der Meer

I feel very honored to host some workshops with Charity van der Meer. Charity is a fantastic felter in the Netherlands with a unique feminine style. She will be my  guest from 5-8th and 15th April this year for giving three workshops. The first workshop will be felting a multilayered hat at the 5th or 15th of April. And in a 3-days workshop from 6-8th April she will learn you how to make a gorgeous felted springcoat with a lot of layers and different fibers. Ik verheug me nu al op de komst van Charity van der Meer begin april. Zij is een fantastische viltster met een  eigen vrouwelijke stijl. We zien steeds meer van haar in de bladen staan en regelmatig laat zij haar kleding zien in diverse modeshows. Zij zal op 5 en 15 April een 1-daagse workshop geven in het vilten van een Multilayered Hat. Van 6-8 april as wordt je geleerd een unieke jas te vilten. Mocht je gedetailleerde informatie willen ontvangen stuur mij dan persoonlijk een email.

I'am not sure why I fall in love with this colour, maybe it are the raining and dark days were having here in the Netherlands. With this colour there is no bad luck on Friday the 13th or a blue monday at the third monday in January. With this colour there will be a shiny bright feeling allover! Lately I have done some tests in my dyelab with brasilwood and it is amazing how many colours you can get from one colour. I'am still searching for some answers before making any conclusions.

In this nunofelted wrap I have combined a brasilwooddyebath with the natureprints of eucalyptus, orangeleaves picked from the orange storeboxes at the supermarket, onion and dried sumacleaves in a hotbundle around a iron pipe. When opening it gave me all these colour-surprises!

In the end of this season the last hortensiaflowers in our nursery are giving their beautifull antique shades in purple, lavender and soft green. Special the hortensia with the name 'together' I love very much. It inspired me to make this long jacket with some pieces of an old scarf and sari. I dye it in the colour plum, which faded out in a soft teal-grey. It gave the jacket a romantic gothic style.



To tell you the truth thefelting didn't go as easy as I wanted. Every jacket is an OOAK, one of a kind and unique. There is always something new I like to try in it and therefore the risk of some difficulties. In this jacket the silkpieces of an old sari gave me some trouble, because they wouldn't catch by the wool and they lost a lot of colour in the dyebath. After dyeing I took the loose pieces away and they left me with a beautifull green shade, which matches perfectly with the green shade of the dyebath. The wristwarmers I had made to complete the jacket were to thick to wear under the sleeves. I decide to cut them open, stitch them together and use it as a headwrapping. It will keep me warm in the coming winter!
