some new workshops

The Netherlands seems attracks all kind of feltteachers from abroad. Via  all kind of social networks I'am very lucky to get to know and meet some of them!

At the end of May I will welcome Claudia U. Gemein from Germany. Her name was mentioned to me when I was visiting in 2007 Turkish feltmaster Mehmet Girgiç. She has done an intensive study in traditional felt and had the chance to work with him some years. Together with her background as a sculpturist she can lead you on an artistic felt path. In the workshop of 27 and 28 May, 2012 we will work with the charasterics of wool in making an unique and personal sculpture.

Kate Ramsey of Fabulous Felt will teach Modern Designs with felt in lines and holes, making a range of scarfs at 9 en 10 June, 2012.

Just one week later Tatiana Sheverda from Australia will come to Europe and she will stop at my atelier. Her speciality is working with felt-shibori. In this 2 days masterclass she will teach the unique way of creating marvelous 3D surfaces from nuno-felted pieces and make series of accessoires and samples featuring a range of shibori techniques.

A little bit of trumpetnoise for myself. I have made a small video of the 2-minutes of my first fashionfame with my NOWA Natural Organic Wearable Art '11 collection from my label Plantdrukkunst ©. This was possible because of the organisation of a fashionshow with and by members of the Dutch Feltassociation.

'I will always love you'

While there was snow and ice everywhere here in the Netherlands I started to work on a new springdress. Two weeks ago I made this one, named it 'I will always love you'. Just in time for Valentineday, not knowing that this tragedy with Whitney Houston would happen. There is an old dutch 'poem' saying that flowers will fade, boats will drown, but the love will always excist. In this dress love is showed by the colour of the eucalyptus leaf and the sweet soft pink of the natural dyebath with redwood.   

Twee weken geleden toen er overal nog sneeuw lag was ik al bezig met de lente. Wat begon als een proefje veranderde in een kledingstuk dat zowel als jurk als rok gedragen kan worden. Ik gaf het de naam 'I will always love you'. Helemaal passend bij de Valentijnsdag, maar niet wetende dat Whitney Houston enkele dagen terug op zo'n tragische manier om het leven zou komen. Het poeziegedichtje 'bloemen verwelken, bootjes vergaan, maar onze liefde zal altijd bestaan' speelde door mijn hoofd. In deze jurk vertaald dat zich in de zoete tint van het roodhout verfbad en de zachtoranje print van de eucalyptusbladeren.     

Cut them up / de schaar erin!

Completely in love with the coats from Katwise I decided to make myself one. Last week I have bought the Katwise-coat tutorial, which read like a book. She is really a warmhearted person.  I had this plan to make the coat with several pieces of nunofelt I made some years ago. They were to small for a jacket and I didn't want to fill my house with more cushioncovers. They were waiting in my freezer - to prevent them of the mots - for better times!
A few days ago I took all the pieces in red, orange and purple out of it.  I dare to them cut up in many pieces to form an enormous carouselskirt and hoodie. After miles of stitching I attached it all at a felted and handdyed sweater. Nunofelt made with of old scarves and a sweater being the base of a coat, this is real recycling!  It's not so cold any more in my own baboushka-coat. Thanks Louca for modelling it and all credits to Katwise for being so inspirational!!!

Helemaal verliefd op de jassen die Katwise maakt van oude wollen truien, besloot ik er zelf een te gaan maken. Ik kocht een werkbeschrijving van haar, die op zichzelf al een feest is om te lezen! Katwise is een bijzondere vrouw en dat schemert door in alles wat ze schrijft en hoe ze denkt. Mijn plan was om de jas te maken van heel veel lappen nunovilt, die te klein waren voor een kussenhoes maar te groot voor een agendaomslag. Bovendien had ik daar ook geen zin in dus bewaarde ik ze in de vriezer tegen de mot voor betere tijden. Een paar dagen terug haalde ik alle lappen in de kleuren van rood, rose en paars uit de vriezer en durfde ik zowaar de schaar erin te zetten.  

Na vele meters gestikt te hebben werden rok en muts aan een gevilte en handgeverfde wollen trui bevestigd. Recycling ten top, oude sjaaltjes worden viltlappen en de lappen samen met een trui worden een jas! Hier word ik warm van en de kou kan me even niet deren. Dank je wel Louca voor het showen en alle eer aan Katwise voor haar inspiratie.

workshop with Charity van der Meer

I feel very honored to host some workshops with Charity van der Meer. Charity is a fantastic felter in the Netherlands with a unique feminine style. She will be my  guest from 5-8th and 15th April this year for giving three workshops. The first workshop will be felting a multilayered hat at the 5th or 15th of April. And in a 3-days workshop from 6-8th April she will learn you how to make a gorgeous felted springcoat with a lot of layers and different fibers. Ik verheug me nu al op de komst van Charity van der Meer begin april. Zij is een fantastische viltster met een  eigen vrouwelijke stijl. We zien steeds meer van haar in de bladen staan en regelmatig laat zij haar kleding zien in diverse modeshows. Zij zal op 5 en 15 April een 1-daagse workshop geven in het vilten van een Multilayered Hat. Van 6-8 april as wordt je geleerd een unieke jas te vilten. puff-boxes / poederdozen

Before making the rugs from the previous post I had made some samples. Usually they end up in some storebox, but these I wanted to use as a flap. I choose a simple round bag as a body. It is nothing fancy, nothing special, no great or orignal design, just easy to do. I have experimented with woolen etamine and chiffonsilk as a nunofelt for the inside. Also I wanted them to dye natural and see what colour was left from some of my old dyebaths as brasilwood, privet-berries and eucalyptus. With the exhausted colours I ended up with lovely soft puff-tones. And laying next to eachother on the edge of my couch  they came alife. Suddenly I thought of puff-boxes, soft and sweet. My youngest daughter adores them, so probably they will end up as little cushions on her sofa.....

Voordat ik aan het grotere werk begon van de zachte kleden, wilde ik eerst weten hoe deze vachtjes zouden vilten en welke methode voor mij zou werken. Normaal gesproken eindigen deze proeflapjes ergens in een doos, maar nu wilde ik er toch wat mee doen. Het werd een flap op een eenvoudig rond tasje, geen hoogstandje maar een perfecte achtergrond van mijn harige proefjes. Sommige hebben een wollen etamine als nunovilt voor de binnenkant, wat ze gelijk een stuk steviger maakt. Ook wilde ik weten hoeveel kleurstof er nog in een aantal van mijn oude natuurlijke verfbaden zou zijn. Door mijn roodhout, ligusterbesjes en eucalyptus helemaal uit te verven kreeg ik mooie zachte poedertinten. De hele sterke rood-oranje is van het 1e bad eucalyptus. Ze zijn verre van perfect, maar toen ze zo naast elkaar lagen kreeg ik het gevoel van poederdozen, zacht, zoet en weelderig. Ik geloof dat mijn jongste dochter ze wel ziet zitten als kussentjes op haar bed.....

For a few weeks my friend stored 7 sheepfleeces in my workplace. The smell of mothballs infiltrated every inch of it. I made some samples and find my own way to deal with them. And with the information of the lecture 'Walls of felt' with Jolande van Luijk at last Sunday about how to make a big felt of raw wool we started to work on a Gotland fleece which was already a bit felted at the back of the fibers. We combed it, lay down some extra wool on it and covered it with a piece of cheesecottont. I suggusted to use the sander to prefelt the back. So we did. After this part was done we turned it to the other side and started to rub and massage the fibers with our fingers between the locks and curls. Working and Chatting, time flies. Can you imagine that it took with the two of us only three hours to make this one? After a lovely lunch we made a big sample with all the other fibers from Sikko Oegema, De Weidedonk . We layed down the White Bleufaced Leicester, the Wensleydale, the Brilschaff and the Ouessant, covered it with some dark fleece and did the same job as in the morning. It was a hardworking day, I'am very tired but also very satisfied with the outcome.

Al enkele weken liggen er een aantal vachten van mijn vriendin op mijn werkplek. De geur van mottenballen komt je tegemoet, zodra je de schuurdeur open doet! Ik had er al een aantal testjes meegedaan en zo mijn eigen manier bedacht. En met de informatie van Jolande van Luijk over het vilten van een groot kleed gingen we aan de slag. Eerst een gottland-vachtje dat al licht vervilt was afgeschoren. Door het lichtelijk op te kammen en wat extra vlies met katoen erop krijgt het meer body. Het lukte om het met een schuurmachine aan te vilten en vervolgens aan de voorkant verder door te werken met de handen. We wilden de krul de krul laten en het haar los laten hangen. Na een lekkere lunch waren we weer uitgerust voor het volgende stuk. We maakten een grote proeflap van ongeveer 1m2 met alle soorten wol van bluefaced leicester, wensleydale, brilschaap en ouessant. Uiteraard ben ik nu moe maar zeer tevreden over wat we samen hebben bereikt.

rolling, rolling, rolling.....

Yesterday we had a very joyfull day, 14 women rolling balls. Together we did almost 200 pieces!  They are going to be use at the opening of the 20th anniversary of our Dutch Feltinggroup VKG ath the 20th January, 2012. We chatted, laughed and worked together. Maria sponsered 150 tennisballs, which we have felted in with greys, browns and a bit of black like in the middle ages. They are transformed now in soft felted 'bullets', associated with the museum 'Het Kruithuis'.
